Seniors (Medicare)

All of these plan options are designed to help cover some of the expenses not paid by original Medicare and help limit your annual out-of-pocket expenses for medical care.

Medicare was never intended to cover all your health care costs - in fact, it is possible for the average person to end up spending thousands per year in addition to their covered benefits.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR A MEDICARE HEALTH PLAN

  • Needs more benefits beyond what is covered by Original Medicare.
  • Wants more predictable costs than those offered by Original Medicare..

Understanding Medicare

Medicare Supplement Insurance - MediGAP

A Medigap policy is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill the "gaps" in Original Medicare Plan coverage. Medigap policies help pay your share (coinsurance, copayments, or deductibles) of the costs of Medicare-covered services.

Advantages

  • Enjoy lower or zero co-pays and deductibles for Medicare A & B covered medical expenses
  • You are guaranteed the right to buy a Medigap plan during your open enrollment period
  • You can pick from different plans to get one that suits you

Disadvantages

  • Plan premiums can change from year to year
  • Beneficiaries pay higher premiums that are age-banded
  • Must purchase a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan
  • After your open enrollment period, insurers can refuse coverage or charge you a higher premium based on your health, or make you wait to get coverage for an illness you already have

Medicare Advantage Plans (MA) - Part C

A plan offered by a private insurance company that combines coverage for Medicare Parts A & B. Some plans include Part D. These plans are referred to as Medicare Advantage with Prescription Drug (MA-PD) coverage.

The Four (4) "flavors" of Medicare Part C

  1. Health Maintenance Organization Plans (HMOs)
  2. Preferred Provider Organization Plans (PPOs)
  3. Special Needs Plans (SNP)
  4. Private Fee for Service Plans (PFFS)

Advantages

  • Convenience of single plan
  • Some include prescription drug coverage for no additional premium
  • Some offer additional benefits not covered by Medicare (e.g., preventive care, dental, vision)
  • If eligible for Medicare, you cannot be denied coverage (special rules apply to ESRD)
  • If there is a premium, it is not affected by your age or health status
  • Some plans offer limits on the total amount you will pay for healthcare in a year

Disadvantages

  • In most plans, you receive your coverage in a service area - unless it's an emergency
  • Your access to doctors and hospitals may be limited to a network of local providers
  • Plan premiums and terms can change from year to year
  • There are Limited time periods for enrollment or plan changes

Part D Stand Alone Prescription Drug Plan

This is insurance coverage for both brand-name and generic prescription drugs at participating pharmacies in your area. It provides protection for people who have very high drug costs or unexpected changes in your drug needs.
